
Why we use gold-coated IR lamps in semiconductor fabs
When you’re processing semiconductor wafers, the heat demands are brutal. We’ve all heard the talk about “green factories” and carbon neutrality, but in the real world, that just boils down to one thing: stop wasting energy. The goal is to get the heat exactly where it needs to go—into the substrate—without heating up the entire machine chassis in the process.
The trick with the gold coating
Standard quartz lamps are a bit messy; they throw energy everywhere. To fix that, we add a thin layer of gold to the quartz. Think of it as a filter. The gold reflects the long-wave radiation back into the filament but lets the short-wave IR fly right through. You end up with a concentrated beam of energy. You aren’t wasting power heating the air or the vacuum chamber. When you stop fighting the environment, your energy bill drops. That’s the simplest way to shrink the carbon footprint of a fab line.
Power, speed, and the risks
We build these lamps for serious power density. We run them at high wattages because speed is everything. If you can ramp up the heat instantly, you cut down on cycle times and keep the wafers from warping. Fast cycles mean you get more done for every kilowatt-hour you spend. But here’s the catch. That kind of intensity creates a lot of localized heat. If your cooling manifold isn’t up to the task, you’re going to have a bad day. You’ll see burned-out connectors or warped mounting brackets real quick.
Getting them installed (and keeping them alive)
We designed these to be easy. They’re basically drop-in replacements for the heating arrays you already have. The ends are precision-cut so the lamp sits flush in the reflector without any fuss. But you have to beobsessiveabout cleanliness. Gold coatings are incredibly sensitive. A single fingerprint or a tiny smudge of oil on the quartz creates a hot spot. And a hot spot is a death sentence—it’ll crack the tube the very first time you power it up. That’s why we ship them in clean-room packaging. One speck of dust can ruin the whole thing.
