
Putting a 1500W infrared heater in your bathroom or out in a gazebo is a great idea for staying warm, but you can’t just slap a waterproof cover on it and call it a day. Think about it. You’ve got high wattage in a room full of steam and condensation. Everything gets damp. And when surfaces get wet, they start conducting electricity in ways you really don’t want. To keep things safe, we focus on the “barrier”—making sure the live heating element stays far away from the metal frame. Dealing with the damp Here’s the thing: water vapor is sneaky. It gets into standard housings. To stop current from leaking into the frame, we use high-grade ceramic insulators right at the lamp terminals. If those fail, you’re looking at a ground fault, and nobody wants that. We also use silicone-insulated wiring. Why? Because 1500W gets hot. Like, really hot. Standard wires can melt or degrade, but silicone handles the heat and keeps moisture from creeping into the connections. The seal struggle You’ll see a lot of heaters with an IP44 rating, but in a steamy bathroom, that’s often not enough. We use heavy-duty sealed gaskets around the lens and the mounting plate to keep the wet stuff out. But there’s a catch. When those infrared tubes heat up, they expand. If they’re clamped too tight, they’ll actually crack the seals as they grow and shrink. We use floating mounts to give the tubes some breathing room. If that seal breaks, moisture hits the terminals, and that’s where things get dangerous. Heat vs. Airflow It feels like the answer is to just seal the whole thing in a tight box, right? Wrong. If you seal it too tight, you trap the heat and fry the internal driver. It’s a balancing act. You need a design that pulls heat away from the electronics (a good heat sink) without letting the steam wander inside. One last pro tip: always put a drip-loop in your wiring. It stops water from running straight down the cable and into your junction box. And please, for the love of everything, wire it to a dedicated GFCI breaker. When the humidity hits 100%, it’s the only way to sleep soundly knowing you’re safe.
