
Stop Fighting the Draft: A Better Way to Heat Open Spaces
Trying to warm up a changing room or a drafty warehouse corridor usually feels like a losing battle. If you’re using traditional forced-air heat, you’re basically paying to heat the ceiling. By the time that warm air actually drifts down to the floor, you’ve wasted a ton of energy and your team is still shivering. That’s why we go with ceiling-mounted infrared heaters. Instead of messing with the air, these things just beam heat directly at the people and objects below. It’s basically instant. You don’t have to wait for a furnace to kick in or for air to circulate through the room. You flip the switch, the element glows, and you feel the warmth on your skin and clothes almost immediately. It turns a freezing zone into a place where you can actually breathe without seeing your own breath. But you can’t just slap these on the ceiling and hope for the best. If your ceilings are high, you need a lot more power. Heat fades as it travels, so if the unit is too far up, it’ll feel like a distant sun—nice, but not enough. We usually spend some time tweaking the reflectors to make sure the beam is hitting exactly where people are standing. A couple of things to watch out for… First, these panels pull a lot of juice. If you aren’t careful, you’ll trip your breakers the second everything kicks on. Make sure your electrical panel can actually handle the load before you start wiring. Then there’s the “shadow” problem. Radiant heat works like a flashlight—if you can’t see the heater, you aren’t feeling the heat. If someone steps behind a big locker or a concrete pillar, they’re back in the cold. When we’re planning the layout, we map out those dead zones so nobody is left freezing. One last tip: don’t leave them running 24/7. Hook them up to motion sensors or a zoned controller. That way, they only work when someone is actually in the room, and you aren’t throwing money out the window.
