You end up using a towel or your hand to wipe a little hole in the steam just to see your face. It’s annoying. That’s where infrared (IR) mirror heaters come in. But instead of just flipping a switch and hoping for the best, why not just make the house do it for you? Making the hardware play nice To get these heaters talking to your smart home, you just need a smart relay or a dimmer. Most of these heaters run on standard power, so the smart controller basically acts as the brain. I usually stick with Zigbee or Matter because they’re fast. No one wants to wait ten seconds for a command to travel across the house. The real magic happens when you tie it to a “Morning Routine.” Imagine this: your bedroom lights click on, and at that exact moment, the mirror starts warming up. By the time you actually walk into the bathroom, the glass is crystal clear and the air feels cozy. How the heat actually works Here is the cool part about infrared: it doesn’t waste time heating up all the air in the room. It goes straight for the glass and you. It’s fast. Really fast. If you want to get fancy, throw in a humidity sensor. The second the sensor feels that spike in moisture from your shower, it tells the heater to kick in. You don’t even have to think about it; the fog just never happens. A few things to watch out for Now, you can’t just crank the heat to max and call it a day. If the heating element is too powerful for the type of glass you have, you can end up with “hot spots.” In the worst-case scenario, the glass could actually crack from the stress. To avoid that, I suggest using a PWM controller. Instead of just slamming the heater “On” or “Off,” it modulates the power. It keeps the temperature steady, which is better for the glass and means your heater won’t burn out nearly as fast. It’s a simple setup. You let the smart logic handle the timing and the IR hardware handle the physics, and you never have to wipe a mirror again.
