
Why Your Bathroom Heater Actually Dies (And How to Stop It)
Ever wonder why so many bathroom infrared heaters just… quit? Most people assume the filament snapped. But usually, it’s something way more boring—and way more avoidable. It’s the lead-wire seal. Think about it. You’ve got a quartz tube getting screaming hot, right next to external wiring that needs to stay cool. That’s a massive temperature jump in a tiny space. If the seal is sloppy, the heat doesn’t stay in the tube. It leaks. It creeps. And then it starts cooking the insulation on your wires.
The “Slow Burn” Problem
I’ve seen cheap assemblies use basic glues or loose crimps all the time. It’s a recipe for disaster. When a seal isn’t airtight, moisture and oxygen sneak in. That starts eating away at the electrode. But the real killer is “heat soak.” The heat travels up the wire, making the PVC or silicone jacket brittle. Eventually, it cracks. And once that insulation is gone? You’ve got a short circuit. That’s why we stick to the high-end stuff—glass-to-metal seals or ceramic potting. It creates a hard thermal break. It basically tells the heat, “Stop right here.”
It’s All in the Craft
You can’t just slap some glue on a wire and hope for the best. Getting the lead-wires right takes a bit of an art. You need the pressure and temperature to be exactly right during fusion. We use a vacuum-sealed potting method because air pockets are the enemy. Here’s the thing: air pockets act like insulators in all the wrong places. They create these little hot spots that melt the wire jacket from the inside out. You can’t see it happening, but it’s happening. Plus, heaters go through a constant cycle of heating up and cooling down. That makes materials expand and shrink. A proper seal handles that stress. Without it, the wire eventually pulls away from the contact point. Then you get arcing. And arcing is how you get a fire.
One Little Warning
There is a trade-off, though. Because these high-spec seals are so tight, the leads are a bit more rigid. You can’t just bend them at sharp angles during installation. If you kink a sealed lead, you might crack the ceramic. Just give the wires a gentle, natural curve when you’re wiring them up. Your heater will thank you for it.
