
Why Your Outdoor Heaters Keep Shorting Out (And How We Fix It)
If you’re putting infrared heaters in a pergola, you’re basically picking a fight with two things: rain and heat. Most of those generic heaters you see online fail for the same reason. The spot where the lead wire plugs into the heating element is just… weak. Water sneaks in, or the insulation gets baked until it cracks, and suddenly your heater is a very expensive paperweight because it shorted out. The problem is the seal. Usually, these things are held together with some cheap glue or a loose rubber gasket. That doesn’t cut it outdoors. Think about it: when the lamp gets screaming hot, the metal and the sealant both expand. But they don’t expand at the same rate. That creates tiny gaps. Once a little moisture seeps into that high-voltage connection? Boom. It’s over. We do things differently. Instead of just squeezing a bead of glue and hoping for the best, we use high-temp silicone gaskets and compression fittings. It’s a mechanical lock. We aren’t just relying on a chemical bond to hold the weather out. Plus, we use wire insulation that can handle way more heat than the lamp actually puts out. That way, the jacket stays flexible instead of turning brittle and snapping. Now, there’s one thing to keep in mind. Because the seal is so tight and heavy-duty, that connection point holds onto heat a bit longer after you flip the switch off. It’s just physics. Just make sure your housing design gives that area some breathing room. You don’t want that leftover “heat soak” melting any plastic parts nearby. At the end of the day, getting the sealing right is the difference between a heater that lasts for years and one that trips your breakers the first time it rains.
