
Keeping Your Infrared Heaters Safe in Wet Zones
Let’s be honest: mixing electricity and water is a recipe for disaster. Whether you’re setting up a steamy bathroom or a brooding area for animals, putting an infrared lamp in a damp spot is risky. Water conducts electricity. One stray drop hitting a live terminal and—pop—you’ve got a blown fuse or something much worse. To stop that from happening, we focus on two things: how we insulate the electricity and how we seal the box.
Stopping the Leaks
You can’t just throw a plastic shell around a lamp and call it a day. That won’t cut it. We use ceramic insulators and high-temp silicone seals at the ends of the lamps to make sure the current stays where it belongs and doesn’t leak into the chassis. Then there’s the wiring. This is where a lot of people mess up. If you use standard PVC wire, the heat from the lamp will eventually melt the jacket. Once that copper is exposed, you’re looking at a short circuit. We stick to fiberglass-braided or fluoropolymer wiring because they can actually handle the heat without turning into a puddle.
Plugging the Holes
The connector is almost always the first thing to fail. Whether it’s an R7s or a screw-terminal, moisture loves to sneak in, cause some corrosion, and start arcing. To fight this, we use IP65-rated enclosures with gasketed cable glands. It basically keeps the steam and splashes out. One pro tip: always use a “drip loop” with your wiring. Just let the cable dip down before it goes into the socket. That way, water runs off the bottom of the loop instead of sliding straight into your electronics.
The Balancing Act: Heat vs. Water
Here is the tricky part. Tight seals are great for keeping water out, but they’re a nightmare for heat. If you seal everything too tight, the heat builds up around the lamp’s end-caps. If it gets too hot, your filament is going to burn out way faster than it should. It’s a bit of a tug-of-war. You need a seal that’s tight enough to be safe, but you still need a way for the heat to escape—maybe through a heat-sink or a vented housing that lets air move without letting water in. And for peace of mind? Just wire the whole thing into a GFCI. That way, if there is a leak, the power cuts instantly. It’s the best safety net you can have.
