
Keeping Babies Warm Without Hurting Their Eyes
When you’re designing an infrared heater for a bathroom—especially one for newborns—the biggest headache isn’t actually the heat. It’s the light. See, standard short-wave lamps blast out a lot of visible light and UV rays. For us adults, that’s just a bright light. But for a baby with eyes that aren’t fully developed? That’s a real problem. We handle this by shifting the light spectrum. We use special coatings or doped quartz glass to filter out those harsh blue peaks and UV rays. The result is a “soft light.” You still get all the warmth needed to keep a baby cozy, but without the high-energy photons that stress out their eyes. The guts of the lamp Inside, we use a tungsten filament tucked into a high-purity quartz tube. We set the wattage so it heats up fast—because no one wants to wait around—but we keep a close eye on the glass temperature. We can’t have the surface getting hot enough to cause a burn. The best part? It uses radiation. Instead of trying to warm up the chilly air in a drafty bathroom (which is basically impossible), it warms the body directly. It’s an instant, cozy feeling. The trade-offs Now, nothing is perfect. Adding those eye-protection filters does mean you lose a little bit of raw power compared to a basic halogen tube. You might see a slight dip in the total heat output per watt. But when you’re dealing with a baby, that’s a trade I’ll make every single time. Safety wins. One last thing: make sure your housing is IP65 rated. Bathrooms are humid. If steam leaks into the electrical connections, it’ll fry your terminals in no time. Keep it sealed tight and you’re good to go.
